In many countries, coats and gowns reaching below the knee, have been used for centuries. Often worn for formal use, or as part of a professional or military uniform.
In the west the profile of the overcoat has remained pretty much unchanged for a long time.
The Frockovercoat
During the Regency period, form fitting clothes were the vogue, with flared skirts, this gradually shifted to looser fitting coats that we see today, an example being the Chesterfield coat which became popular by the end of the Victorian period. Until then most overcoats were double breasted, these days most are single breasted and can be a little shorter in length.
The Chesterfield in both double and single breasted styles.

As your local tailor for our studios in Camberley and Milton Keynes, I am often asked what the fashion trends are in mens suits at the moment.
It is a very sharp look, and suits a wide variety of body shapes. But the single breasted suit is still by far the most popular suit style. What we have seen though is changes in detail in the styling, such as peaked lapels, narrower collars with contrasting fabrics and shorter body lengths.
At the expense of over emphasising the X Factor influence, Gary Barlow has shown this difference in styling very well, with a number of well tailored suits and jackets in unusual fabrics and quirky designs.
Here he favours a fabric that is also showing a comeback, tweed checks .
And here a really different take on evening wear. Notice the shorter cut on the jacket length.
If you like any of these styles, and would like to design something similar for yourself, come and see me in either Camberley or Milton Keynes or my home branch in Oxford!
