Today is the first day of Movember; the month long tache-a-thon to get men talking about their health and raise awareness, particularly for cancers that affect men such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The charity was founded (as most crazy ideas are) by a group of guys one night in the pub. Who knows how much they had to drink, but thankfully they remembered enough the morning after to put their pub fueled plan into action. The idea? To a grow a moustache for the whole month of November.
9 years later and with just short of 2million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the cause, this year is set to be bigger and better then ever. They've already taken over our newspaper front pages, projected a hologram (Mo-logram) onto Big Ben (men haven't paid that much attention to the iconic London Monument since a certain Miss Porter) and they've also managed to gather a strong troop of celebrities and ambassadors to drive awareness to new levels. In their words;
No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
One of the original Movember founders, JC, on BBC breakfast this morning, wearing the 2012 Movember tweed jacket.
Last year, globally, the charity raised just under 80 million, not bad for a relatively new name in the third sector, but this year surely the aim is to tip the balance at over 100 million? And, as last year, we're doing our bit to help by donating from sales of our official Movember tweed jackets, ties and laptop sleeves. The jackets were designed by the Movember guys themselves, so they ain't for the faint hearted, that's just not their style. For them, it's about awareness, encouraging men to see their doctor if they are concerned about their health and a LOT of parties along the way.
So, here's to Movember. Happy growing!
