Autumn is here! If you don’t believe me, take a look at the celebrity suits on the red carpet this week–particularly at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Rough, thick or fuzzy autumnal fabrics, like tweed, abounded.
Fancy a Tweed Three-Piece?
In Toronto, Andrew Garfield matched his rough cloth suit with an equally rough beard.
His three piece suit, which looked to be made of tweed, was on the slim side but fit like a glove.
What is Cumberbatch’s jacket made of?
Also in Toronto–wearing a thick and roughly-textured cloth–Benedict Cumberbatch wore a mid-grey jacket for some “dapper casual” chic.
Try as I might, I can’t figure out what his jacket is made of. It sort of looks like tweed but it’s too fuzzy. Any ideas?
Trouser Pleats are Back
As if still in character as the Kray Twins, Tom Hardy wore a large black suit at the premiere of his movie The Drop.
The reason I’m including this suit on the list is that you don’t get to see trouser pleats very often these days–and Hardy is selling them big-time. They may have been out of fashion for a while but Hardy makes them look stylishly masculine.
Man in Black
Another black suit to make the list was Charlie Hunnam’s at the premiere of the new Sons of Anarchy season.
The suit is pretty standard, but I love how Hunnam goes all out for the “men in black” look with his black tie and black shades.
Eddie in a Turquoise Double-Breasted
One very special suit stood out from all others this week.
Eddie Redmayne showed up at the Toronto International Film Festival wearing a turquoise–yes, you heard correctly, a turquoise–suit.
Not only was the suit’s colour daring, its design was ultra modern: a 6 x 2 double-breasted jacket, trousers with an extremely narrow leg, and what looked like oxblood or burgundy dress shoes.
Notice how the slimness of Redmayne’s double-breasted jacket requires the lapels to be a lot smaller than your average double-breasted front. They’re peaked but they look tiny. Also, the top 2 buttons are spaced much closer together than your old-style double-breasted jacket.
What you’re witnessing is the reinvention of the double-breasted style before our very eyes. More suits next week!
