Fashion never has a dull week, there is always someone pushing the boundaries or exhibiting their own individual style and this week we saw individuals excelling with their own take on the female suit. The style of suits worn were very diverse and original but also ready to wear and can be used as perfect inspiration for those looking to create their own custom tailored suit.
Mary-Kate Olsen (one part of the incredibly famous twin duo Mary- Kate and Ashley) recently got married to her fiancé, half brother of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, Olivier Sarkozy. The former child star and her sister have since retired from acting but have had a huge impact in the world of fashion with their unique boho fashion sense and very petite bodies. In honour of her recent nuptials, I decided to look back on the twin’s fashion suits. The girls are 5”-5”2 and so having some of their clothes tailored is an absolute necessity to ensure the best outfit. The Olsen’s have shown their adoration for the suit and have excelled in looking amazing in it. In the image above, Ashley and Mary-Kate are wearing contrasting but equally chic two pieces. Ashley wears a powdery pink long blazer with matching high waist trouser and a gold clasp. As the colour is pastel and it is transitional as it is not a bold, bright strictly summer colour so it is suitable for those who don’t just want to wear black all through winter. The blazer is the statement piece with shoulder padding and notched lapels, the details are simplistic to not exaggerate the colour. The matching trousers are high waist with a gold belt to accent Ashley’s tiny frame and provide shape under the blazer. The trouser length is tailored perfectly as it is not drowning her silhouette. Mary-Kate wears a contrasting black two piece with an identical satin blazer. Mary-Kate’s look appears more edgy with a small zip featured at the ankle of her trouser. The all black ensemble is timeless with the satin blazer being a statement piece that is easy to work with and a great way to add texture and to spice up the average suit.
Safe to say my admiration for the Olsen twins has been revealed however moving on to the other suits of the week; I stumbled upon a suit street style that I think is revolutionary and gorgeous. Street style is holds inspiration and displays the best looks on the ordinary (contrary to what one might think). This deep cobalt blue suit is festive, fun and has a vintage vibe for those who like to look cool as a breeze. The velvet material is very season appropriate and on trend giving a warm feel throughout the winter months. The suit is luxurious yet simple with a classic cigarette trouser paired with a classic tailored blazer. As seen in the image, a white bespoke shirt is the perfect match to complete this attire. The two piece is the definition of ‘wardrobe must-have’ for all upcoming Christmas/New Years events. It is a great day-to-night look with or without heels, the trousers and blazer could equally be worn separately as statement pieces to provide multi-use for this beautiful suit.
Actress Amber Heard looked alluring in her detailed black tuxedo two piece that she wore to the premiere of her upcoming movie The Danish Girl. The wife of Johnny Depp also supports the velvet trend with the floral patterned blazer giving a textured effect. The blazer is equipped with shoulder padding, jetted pockets and velvet notched lapels. It is also tailored providing a shapely silhouette alongside the matching patterned cigarette trousers with a velvet band at the waist. This suit is perfect for someone who wants a change but not a huge statement. The subtle pattern is ideal for Christmas and also for the working woman who wants to appear more festive. Adding a simple pattern can uplift an outfit without overdoing it. This black suit is also a timeless wardrobe asset.
Leading female in The Danish Girl, Alicia Vikander looks charming and sophisticated in a traditional suit. Unlike the more dramatic styled suits which I have mentioned above, Alicia demonstrates how one cannot go wrong with a simple blazer. A conventional suit is a key wardrobe piece for all ages at all times of the year e.g. job interviews, work, everyday etc. Alicia looks effortlessly chic in her blazer that seems slightly oversized but gives off the popular high fashion androgynous style. It is double breasted with charcoal toned notched lapels and shoulder padding. The blazer is a great statement piece alone and provides a variety of looks.
