With the exception of a navy blue vest and an ultra-modern silver sports coat, this week’s best dressed suits are all about that color which never goes out of fashion: black, black and more black! The week began with David Gandy appearing at a charity event for the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London (for which he performs ambassadorial duties) in a slim-fitting, satin-trimmed, black tuxedo with peaked lapels and a blue vest. Carrying a tiny puppy, Gandy outshone a host of British celebrities on the red carpet, thanks in part to his unusual double-breasted vest with its shawl collar.
The black theme continued with two exquisite appearances by David and Brooklyn Beckham at, respectively, the GQ Awards in Berlin and the Women of the Year Awards at London’s Claridge’s Hotel. Accompanying his mother Victoria at the London event, Brooklyn’s perfectly coiffed hair and sharp black suit demonstrated that the sartorial finesse we associate so often with the Beckhams will last at least into another generation. Like father like son? We think so!
My final two favorite looks this week are from Pharrell Williams and Idris Elba. Elba decided to wear his favorite designer, Gucci, to the White House screening of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, and we couldn’t help admiring his classy "black overcoat/black sweater/patent-leather horsebit loafers" look. Departing from the black theme somewhat, honorable mention must go to the stunning silver-gray sports coat worn by Pharrell Williams at the Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards this week. With its slim cut, fine stitching and fabric that gave the impression of “sparkling,” the jacket ensured that Williams stood out on the red carpet next to the helmet-wearing Daft Punk and Brazilian model Gisele. All in all, a fantastic week for men’s style!
