Embarrassingly I was watching ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ the other night and was checking out the…. Er…. Talent – when I noticed something; nearly EVERYONE on the telly was wearing a Don Draper presidential style pocket square! As I fancy myself as a bit of a trend setter, this may mean that I cannot do the presidential fold anymore as Ant, Dec, Simon, Dermot and even, dare I say it, Louie were all rocking them, meaning this detail is soon to become mainstream.
I am not saying that being mainstream is a bad thing. I mean, its great for the previously forgotten ‘presidential fold’. Also, if it means that more people get into the fun of styling up a suit then I am all for it. It’s just that, at A Suit That Fits, we’re all about individuality; so, if the BGT crew are all rocking them it’s likely that soon everybody will be- and we don’t want to be a sheep. So, what I have decided to do is to provide you lovely people with some other styling solutions for your suit to help you be a ‘trend setting’ individual.
Flower in the lapel – The Boutonniere
Why not pop into your local flower store on your way into work tomorrow morning and, for about £1.50, buy a nice fleur to place in your lapel. I usually go for a green carnation; that may be due to my obsession with Oscar Wilde, but you can go for literally anything – a simple and small red rose is always groovy and it doubles up as a small something to give to your partner in the evening.
Your watch over the shirt cuff
In Italy in the 1950’s the whole country was obsessed with wearing their wrist watches over their shirt sleeves when Gianni Agnelli, one of the principal shareholders of Fiat and a style icon of the time (who was famed for his rather eccentric style) was spotted sporting his watch in this unusual way. Trust me it’s a talking point!
I am going to be honest with you; I am completely useless in the eye department. I cannot find my glasses without my glasses. I have to admit that I found it annoying when people started wearing fake glasses because, again, it meant that I wasn’t the individual anymore. My vintage specs had stopped being cool because they were selling imitation versions in every high street store. Now, however, I’ve gotten over it. I just realized it looks really cool and so that’s why everyone does it! So, purchase a good pair of specs to pair with your suit, it makes your suit look very ‘A Single Man’.
