The “modern revolution in suiting” pioneered by A Suit That Fits means that tailored overcoats are now available at off-the-peg prices throughout Ireland. We offer our 100% wool overcoats in Dublin, Cork and Belfast, completely fitted to your measurements and your budget.
If you’re used to shopping at a department store like Arnotts in Dublin, it may come as a refreshing surprise to be able to pick your overcoat’s styles and colours. But that’s exactly what you can do thanks to the affordable custom tailoring of companies like A Suit That Fits.
Your suit needs an overcoat
When it comes to outerwear, the overcoat is one of the only things which actually looks good with a suit. Some men may choose to wear a parka jacket with their suit, but the mismatch is glaring.
Tailored garments just don’t work well with bulky coats. In the cities of North America, a bulky coat is a necessity, but here in Ireland, we can usually manage okay with a 100% wool overcoat.
Wool is warm, environmentally friendly, and looks more stylish than any other outerwear fabric.
Overcoat trends today
The classic overcoat worn throughout Ireland during the 20th century usually fell below the knee. In keeping with the trend toward slimmer, tailored suits, modern overcoats have tended to be shorter than their 20th century counterparts. This means that overcoats in recent years sometimes fall above the knee (or just below it), and sometimes even halfway up the thigh.
According to a recent article in GQ, however, overcoats today are beginning to become longer and wider again. This doesn’t mean ill-fitting; it just means that the preference for very short, waist-hugging coats may have reached its peak. Of course, you shouldn’t let current trends dictate how you like your overcoat to fall, or how snug you want it to be, but it’s good to know, anyway.
If you’re undecided about the style you’d like, book an appointment with one of our style advisors in Dublin, Cork or Belfast, and discuss the matter with them. They’ll be happy to help.
