Michael Fassbender is the number 1 Irish actor in the world, according to his IMDb STARmeter rating. The stylish actor beat veteran Liam Neeson to the top spot. What better time to shine our sartorial spotlight on Ireland’s number 1 Hollywood movie star?
Fassbender’s Irish heritage is rich, complicated and intriguing.
Born in Germany to a Northern Irish mother, he relocated with his family to Killarney, County Kerry, when he was two years old. On his mother’s side, he’s descended from legendary Irish leader Michael Collins. He’s also rumored to be interested in adapting the story of Cuchulain, the ancient Irish hero, for the silver screen.
In 2008, he famously portrayed Bobby Sands in the movie Hunger. He prepared for the part by starving himself for 10 weeks.
Fassbender later told The Telegraph how much of a formative experience it was seeing Sands’ face on the evening news when he was 11 years old. He called it a “coming of age moment… it stuck in my psyche.”
Before Fassbender decided to pursue acting at the tender age of 17, he considered moving to Dublin to train as a journalist. Instead, he moved to London and began his acting career.
Although Fassbender resides in London, he’s definitely not left his Irish roots behind. Just recently, he filmed a movie (Frank) in Ireland and later attended the Dublin premiere, where he was happy to take selfies with his fans.
What about his style? There’s no doubt about it: Fassbender is known for his sharp, tailored suits, most of them featuring peaked lapels. Not a man for bright colours or distracting patterns, he prefers solid grey, navy and sometimes black suits.
Apparently, he doesn’t consider himself a big fashionisto. He told Rampstyle magazine: “I like to wear clothes in which I feel comfortable. I don’t care for labels or designers. But of course, there are no objections against a suit – for example, from Armani.”
Some of his most stylish moments have been on the red carpet at movie premieres. For example, the charcoal grey, three-piece suit he wore to the X-Men: Days of Future Present premiere in New York earlier this year.
But some of his most stunning appearances have actually been in his movies. The costumes from X-Men: First Class included this fine, light grey suit accented with a purple tie and pocket square.
He also had an amazing wardrobe of Armani suits in The Counselor. That’s all for now!
