Ray Donovan premiered on Showtime in the US last year and quickly became one of the network’s most successful shows ever. The 2nd season debuted last month and so far, it’s getting rave reviews.
One thing that stands out for us, in particular, is Donovan’s wardrobe. We show you how to “get the look.”
South Boston “swagger”
Featuring Liev Schreiber as Ray Donovan, a “fixer” for a powerful law firm (basically someone who does the “dirty work” for rich legal clients), the show has been described as “The Sopranos on Sunset Boulevard.”
As if to corroborate the idea that the show is the West Coast’s answer to The Sopranos, the protagonist Ray Donovan is himself an East Coast transplant.
Originally from South Boston, he now works in Calabasas near Los Angeles. It’s there the show uncovers the seedier aspects of California, as Donovan mingles with the rich, famous and corrupt.
Ray Donovan’s style
If you’ve ever seen the show, you probably already have a good idea of Donovan’s favorite look. Above all, he doesn’t wear anything too fancy – nothing to interfere with that natural South Boston swagger.
Most of the “fixer’s” work takes place out and about, so he’s usually seen wearing a good pair of dark blue jeans, brown shoes, an open collar and a charcoal gray blazer. The perfect “smart casual” wardrobe for a man who wants to look good without wearing a suit.
It’s a simple, stylish and easily achievable look. Most people own a good pair of jeans. All you need to do is invest in a tailored blazer.
Donovan wears a dark navy or black shirt most of the time, as if to emphasize the “dark” nature of his work. If you’re worried you can’t pull off that many dark colors, wear your jeans and blazer with a lighter colored shirt.
Get the look with A Suit That Fits
A Suit That Fits’ pre-designed blazers include this medium gray, two button blazer with notched lapels.
Perfect for pairing with jeans, this blazer features a luxury wool and silk blend cloth. Running through the fabric is an extremely subtle, light blue check.
