The Television BAFTAs took place in London this week but it was two Irish stars who stole the show with their luxurious, shawl collar dinner suits. Graham Norton and Jamie Dornan, Dublin– and Belfast-born respectively, demonstrated the width-variety of your average shawl collar – Norton opting for the wider of the two. If you expected the soon-to-be Christian Grey from the 50 Shades of Grey movie to be the more elegant of the two stars, think again: Norton was on hosting duties and upped his game. Thanks to his Tom Ford suit and its amazingly curvaceous ‘70s-style collar, he nailed it. Dornan also looked good but opted for a plainer, slim collar look.
Another reason Norton excelled on the night was something as simple as his white pocket square. By breaking up the black, it served to highlight the richness of his suit. Dornan, for some reason, opted not to wear one. One lesson we can take from this is how one finishing touch can actually transform an outfit – or at least make a difference between the unremarkable and the stunning. In fact, a quick look back at some of the other suits Norton’s worn to the Television BAFTAs shows that “stunning” could be used to describe any of his award show looks. In 2013 he wore another shawl-collar tuxedo featuring a textured fabric. In 2011 he wore a double-breasted, peaked lapel suit. Keep bringing the style, Graham.
