Did you know that there are plenty of things you can do to stay warm and fashionable this winter besides the obvious donning of an overcoat and scarf? The secret to looking good without disguising your perfect custom suit this winter is to add smart layers under your suit as well as over it. My favorite example of season-specific layering is the classic mixing of knitwear and traditional tailored garments. It seems surprising at first, but introducing a sweater, wool vest, cardigan or turtleneck under a two-piece suit will feel comfortable, look chic and won’t spoil your tailored look.
The secret to layering knitwear well is simple: treat the garment like a waistcoat or vest. Just as you might experiment with matching or contrasting colors when pairing a vest with a jacket and pants, use a cardigan or sweater that complements your suit’s shape and color. Adding a contrastingly colored sweater to your two-piece suit will make your suit stand out marvelously; combining similar tones, on the other hand, will look just as chic. Try mixing a sweater with a full three-piece suit and see how a hint of color will accentuate the texture of your jacket and vest, as in the caramel brown knitwear in the picture (below left).
For the slightly braver dresser, a turtleneck with a two-piece suit can look extremely classy. Tread carefully, however, because the turtleneck/suit look creates a very specific effect. A black turtleneck with a gray suit will look great on many men and is guaranteed to keep you warm in the colder months. Stay warm and enjoy dressing!
