The combination of blue jeans, a white T-shirt and a tailored waistcoat is one of my favorite summer looks. Cristiano Ronaldo was spotted wearing exactly this just recently on a trip to a boxing match with girlfriend Irina Shayk. The simplicity of the white T-shirt and the light grey waistcoat had “mature style” written all over it. If you’re considering introducing tailoring into your casual wardrobe this summer, one way to achieve the look is to wear a separate waistcoat. Wear it over a T-shirt on cooler days. Or with a shirt for evening occasions.
You’ve probably heard how the tradition of leaving the bottom button of one’s waistcoat unbuttoned began when Prince Edward (the future King) left his button undone in the early twentieth century. It was a rather strange craze to take off, really, seeing as the future King only adopted the practice out of necessity: the pressure of his ever-increasing waist-size. Today, in a world obsessed with weight, it’s nice to think that some of our traditions actually derive from people’s sympathy with being portly. Whether Ronaldo here was following tradition or simply left his bottom button undone for comfort (you’ll notice he left the top button undone too), we think he’ll always be a fine example of how to incorporate traditional tailoring into one’s casual garb.
