If you’re looking for a tuxedo, would you rather have completely satin-covered lapels or just satin-framed ones like Brad Pitt’s at the Maleficent premiere this week? Personally, I’d rather have more satin than less, especially on a tuxedo. You’ve got to remember that a tuxedo is an evening suit, a bit like the male version of an evening gown: it’s the satin that adds the shimmering quality which makes it perfect for the night-time. Satin-covered lapels are a more traditional look than satin framing, but that doesn’t make them better. Think of satin framing as a more modern innovation: the look has become extremely popular in the last few years.
Of course, if you’re Brad Pitt it doesn’t matter so much which lapel you go for because you’re always going to look good. Here, Pitt goes tieless, possibly recognizing the daytime nature of the event, which meant that full black tie would be out of place. This didn’t stop Angelina from wearing a full-scale evening gown, though. The interesting thing about this couple is that they dress as a couple. They must organize their look before either of them get dressed. The “all black” look they went for this time definitely seems in keeping with the dark subject of the film Maleficent, too. Possibly, the satin edging on Pitt’s lapels was meant to complement the streaks of light that seem to flow so elegantly in the folds of Jolie’s gown. Beautiful!
