“No brown in town,” went an old saying used by London businessmen to affirm that a brown suit should only be worn in the countryside, never the city. When this saying originated, it was fine for a gentleman to wear a brown tweed suit at his country estate, but to show up at work wearing one would be an embarrassing faux pas.
This rule has relaxed in recent decades. Today the saying would be something like: “No brown in the office.” While you can definitely wear a brown suit “in town,” you probably don’t want to wear one to work.
The Guardians of the Galaxy actor Chris Pratt wore a light brown, almost beige, suit on Late Night With Seth Meyers this week. Judging from the pictures, the suit was made of cotton.
In case you’ve never considered one, a cotton suit in a colour like beige or light coffee brown is a great addition to your summer wardrobe. Notice how differently Pratt’s cotton drapes compared to wool. It gives a more starchy, creased impression. The look is definitely less formal, but with a tailored fit, it has its own elegance.
What shoes should you wear with a light brown suit?
If you’re wearing a light brown suit, dark brown shoes will create a great, contrasting impression.
You can also wear black shoes.
What about the shirt?
A white shirt always looks great with a brown suit.
For a very soft, summery look, pair a light brown suit with a light blue or light pink shirt.
