Our weekly round-up of suited chat show guests this week brings us David Beckham on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Dwayne Johnson (also known as ‘The Rock’) on The Ellen Degeneres Show and Frank Lampard on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man. Each formal figure brings with them their own individual sense of style and tailoring seated and suited as respective chat show guests.
David Beckham on The Late Late Show with James Corden
Beckham chose a soft navy two piece suit for his chat with Corden. A frequent fan of layered three piece suiting, it was nice to see him in a more relaxed two piece. Yet the softness of his attire was streamlined with some noticeable sharp and linear lines – take note of the flat white pocket square and poker straight skinny tie that was worn with his white bespoke shirt. Beckham’s animated gestures on the couch shine a light upon the functionality of his made to measure suit. While his legs are crossed his tailored trousers cater to the movement as the fabric does not gather in places – also witness that as he makes hand movements, the shirt cuffs of his bespoke shirt remain in place and visible at his wrists even while his bespoke blazer sleeves move back up his arms.
Dwayne Johnson on The Ellen Degeneres Show
Identical in their appearance is Johnson with his grey two piece and accompanying casual black top while Degeneres opts for a similar grey blazer and black jumper combination. Johnson’s suiting features a check pattern that utilises a thin black line to create the box shape effect resulting in a subtle deviation from a plain grey suit. Peaked lapels run high up on his bespoke blazer and are almost parallel to his shoulders. This high and wide tailoring approach is utilised to fit Johnson’s muscled body type comfortably. Extending this to his tailored trousers, we can see that he does not need to wear a belt as they fit him perfectly. The relaxation derived from his correctly and comfortably fitting attire is echoed with the wearing of a casual t-shirt instead of a fitted shirt.
Frank Lampard on Alan Carr Chatty Man
Opting for a complete navy ensemble is footballer Frank Lampard appearing on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man. Wearing a triad of navy pieces including a bespoke blazer, tailored trousers and fitted shirt; Lampard’s formal attire played with textures in that his blazer featured a thick fabric, his shirt a thinner linen fabric and his tailored trousers were akin to a denim blend. We can see when he crosses his legs that the trouser fabric becomes skintight and frames the exact shape of his leg. To provide for a visual break from his fitted formal attire, Lampard uses a lighter pocket square to good effect – in this instance a shining pewter square of fabric is used to break through the dense navy suiting.
